Hello friends, this is Shreya here!
I had a botanical medicine lab this quarter where I learned to make a myriad of herbal medicines. I'd like to share one of my favorite recipes with you, which is both fun to make and so effective at what it does: Fire Cider!! Fire Cider is a traditional tonic that promotes overall immune health in the winter season.
Ingredients:
- Onion
- Garlic
- Ginger
- Horseradish
- Optional: Fresh Rosemary or Thyme
- Turmeric powder
- Cayenne Powder
- Apple Cider Vinegar
- Honey (preferably local from your Farmer's Market)
For this recipe you are going to use the appropriate amount of ingredients depending on what size jar you have. You want your total amount of herbs to fill the jar half full. As far as proportions go, you want to use about equal amounts of onion, garlic & ginger, about half that amount of horseradish (as it can be very strong), and an even smaller amount of rosemary/thyme.
Peel and dice the onions, garlic, ginger, horseradish, and rosemary/thyme into small pieces. Then layer them into your jar, filling the jar about half full. Then add turmeric (about 1tsp in an 8oz jar), and cayenne powder (about 1/16 tsp in an 8oz jar). Next pour equal parts apple cider vinegar and honey, to fill the jar to the top. Some people add less honey and more apple cider vinegar-- it's up to you!
Place a piece of wax paper at the top of the jar and then screw on the lid. The wax paper will prevent the rubber from the lid from possibly flavoring your Fire Cider.
Allow the Fire Cider to sit and infuse anywhere from 3 to 6 weeks. Shake the jar daily, and while doing that add your love and good intentions to the Fire Cider. (Love is the most important ingredient!)
After 3 to 6 weeks, strain the herbs out & dispose of them. Save the remaining liquid in a separate jar, and store in the refrigerator (it will last for at least 6 months). This is your completed Fire Cider that will serve you throughout the winter season (unless you run out and need to make more!). You and your family can all benefit from the warming energy boost that this tonic provides on a daily basis!
Dosing:
For wellness and prevention: Take 1 tablespoon of Fire Cider every day.
At the onset of a cold/flu: 1-2 tablespoons
During the course of a cold/flu: Take 1 tsp every 3 hours.
Enjoy!!! <3
